    Bluetooth item locator

The iTag item locator uses surrounding Bluetooth signals on Apple's free Find My network to anonymously pin-point the location of the iTag. The Find My network is a crowdsourced network of hundreds of millions of Apple devices that use Bluetooth wireless technology.

Use of Bluetooth technology means that the item can still be located inside, under covered areas and even under water when in proximity to a Bluetooth device.

Through the Find My app, you can also play a sound on the built-in iTag speaker to help detect the lost item when it's nearby.

    So many uses!

The iTag item locator can be used to find and keep track of many items!

    • Key finder
    • Glasses boxes
    • School bags
    • Luggage tracker
    • Car tracker
    • Item detector

    So many names!

The iTag item locator is known by many names:

    • smart tracker
    • Bluetooth finder
    • GPS tracker finder
    • GPS tracking device
    • tag tracker
    • key detector
    • Bluetooth keychain finder

It is a bit of a misconception that item locators, including the iTag item locator, incorporate GPS technology. For several reasons, including price and practicality of use indoors, item locators use Bluetooth signals to track a precise location.

How effective is the iTag item locator?

When there are other Bluetooth devices around, such as iPhones, the iTag location is accurate and precise, even while indoors. Sounding the beep will help you to locate the exact position.

However, if you are looking for the iTag attached to an item, e.g. your wallet in a large remote field, a precise location will be more difficult. Fewer Bluetooth devices around on the FindMy network will mean fewer location signals. But as soon as your wallet comes into contact with someone on the network, a more accurate position will be visible.

In populated areas, item location is most reliable, and in remote areas, it is approximate and relies on the iTag coming into Bluetooth range with another Bluetooth device.

Do item locators work by GPS?

Item locators are often called 'GPS trackers' or 'GPS tracking devices'. However, it is a misconception that general item locators operate using Global Positioning Systems (GPS). GPS is a satellite-based radio navigation system owned by the US government and operated by the United States Space Force.

The most common applications for GPS include navigation in the air or ocean. In terms of recreation, GPS is popular for hiking, hunting, and cross-country skiing to name a few uses. Anyone who needs to keep track of where they are, to find a location, or know what direction and how fast they're travelling benefit from GPS systems.

Thus, many devices have built-in GPS functions, like high-end smartwatches, emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRBs), boats and ships, most public bike or scooters for sharing services, and many rental vehicle or logistics fleets and services. And obviously all our mobile phones for navigation purposes.

GPS is an expensive technology, and won’t work indoors or in a sheltered area. For price and practicality, item locators commonly use Bluetooth and surrounding Bluetooth devices on a network to track the item down.
