Add extra height to a standard toilet with the adjustable toilet seat raiser. The Betterliving® adjustable toilet seat raiser adds 5cm, 10cm or 15cm to a standard toilet seat, adjustable to existing and changing needs. The armrests offer a secure hold for transfer to and from the toilet, and provide a comfortable support when seated. The armrests can be individually lifted upwards and out of the way, or removed altogether.

The toilet seat raiser works just like a standard toilet seat. The lid and seat can be flipped up so that the bowl can be accessed without the seat.

    • Built-in splash guard
    • Toilet seat lid (flip up lid and seat)
    • Removable armrest handles
    • Aluminium soft-lift armrests
    • Maximum user weight of 136kgs
    • ARTG registered personal hygiene aid (176831)

The toilet seat raiser is simple to install - no tools or permanent modification required. Replace the existing toilet seat with the adjustable toilet seat raiser. Basic assembly is required, similar to that of replacing a general toilet seat.

This adjustable toilet seat raiser is not compatible with hidden or concealed hinge toilets. It fits to most standard toilets (as pictured), replacing a toilet seat and bolting into the existing holes at the back. The mounting bolts slide to suit the size of the toilet bowl. Please refer to the adjustable toilet seat raiser images, Set Up and Operation Guide and the Product Sheet below for further information.

What is the right height for a toilet seat raiser?

In most circumstances, we want the feet to sit flush on the floor while seated on the toilet, the knees level with the hips. If the toilet seat is too low, the
legs are bent at too much of an angle and the knees are not level with the hips – this can cause an uncomfortable posture and difficulty in sitting and rising.

To determine the correct height to raise a toilet seat:

    1. Measure from the back of the person’s knee to the floor.
    2. Measure the height of the toilet porcelain from the floor (excluding the seat).
    3. Subtract the toilet measurement from the person’s knee height.
    4. The difference between the two measurements indicates the raised toilet seat height needed.

An increase of 6cm is a common height to raise a toilet seat.

When considering to use a toilet seat raiser, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional such as an occupational therapist to determine the most suitable toilet seat raiser and height.

    Great oroduct

Purchased for my 85 year old mother in law as she has arthritis in both shoulders and struggled to get off the toilet on her own even with a frame.
By using the raised seat with arms we could remove the other frame and she is now able to maintain her independence and safely use the bathroom.

Hi Sandra, Thank you for sharing your positive experience with our toilet seat raiser! We're happy to hear that our toilet seat raiser has made a positive impact on your mother-in-law's daily routine. We're glad that she is able to maintain her independence and use the bathroom safely. Thank you so much for choosing us. Have a great evening!

    Love the armrests

The armrests are very steady. I can finally get up from the toilet. Should have bought it earlier but was concerned about the look of a toilet seat raiser in the bathroom. Looks actually pretty good.

We are thrilled to hear that you are enjoying the armrests on our toilet seat raiser and that it has made it easier for you to get up from the toilet. We understand your concern about the appearance, but we are glad to hear that it looks good in your bathroom. Thank you for choosing our product.

    More about toilet seat raisers

How toilet seat raisers can improve quality of life

Standing up and sitting down can be challenging for someone with reduced mobility. A raised toilet seat can make bathroom routines easier and more enjoyable, and sometimes be the difference between independence and dependence.

Simply raising the toilet seat a few cm decreases the distance between sitting and standing, which alleviates the need for support or transfers. It also improves safety and reduces the risk for fall accidents. When needed, armrests can be added for further support and security.

The importance of the right raised toilet seat

For many people, a raised toilet seat is the first assistive device introduced to maintain independence. This makes it especially important to choose the right one, so the user gets a positive experience and finds it helpful in daily life.

At The Independence Shop, we supply a range of toilet seat raisers:
    - BetterLiving Adjustable Toilet Seat Raiser
    - Etac Cloo Height-adjustable Raised Toilet Seat with Armrests
    - Etac Hi-Loo Raised Toilet Seat with Armrests

    Why appearances matter

We know that toilet aids can be a sensitive subject. Assistive devises can be a “private matter” and having them on display can make people feel self-conscious. Considerations of visual appeal and modest design of a raised toilet seat are important. Appearances should never stand in the way of someone’s quality of life.

How to choose the right raised toilet seat

Toilet seat raisers come in various designs and heights to accommodate different needs. Some attach to the existing toilet seat, while others replace the entire toilet seat.

In most circumstances, we want the legs of the user's feet to sit flush on the floor when seated on the toilet seat, and for the knees to be level to the hips. If the toilet seat is too low, the legs are bent at too much of an angle and the knees are not level with the hips – this can cause an uncomfortable posture and the user can have difficulty sitting and rising.

    Consideration of the user's mobility:
The user might have specific conditions that influence which seat to choose. For example, someone with balance challenges will benefit from armrests, whereas someone in a wheelchair might want just one armrest to allow for side transfers onto the seat. A person who struggles particularly with standing up or sitting down, for example following hip surgery, can choose a seat that can be set with a slight anterior tilt.

    Consideration of space:
If bathroom space is limited, toilet seat raisers that are attached to the toilet take up less space than freestanding models. If the toilet is close to a wall, one arm support can be removed to save space. Mounting access might also be limited, where a seat with brackets could be the best choice.

Some toilet seat raisers come with armrests, some are adjustable to different heights, some have a splash guard to prevent spills.

The choice of a specific type depends on individual needs, budget, short- or long-term use, and the existing toilet's design. When considering to use a toilet seat raiser, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional such as an occupational therapist to determine the most suitable raised toilet seat.

At The Independence Shop, we supply a range of toilet seat raisers:
    - BetterLiving Adjustable Toilet Seat Raiser
    - Etac Cloo Height-adjustable Raised Toilet Seat with Armrests
    - Etac Hi-Loo Raised Toilet Seat with Armrests

All three toilet seat raisers offer great flexibility for existing and changing needs. The handle armrests offer support, safety and comfort; but these can also be removed to suit. They have various height options and can fit most or all toilet bowls. We find the incorporated splash guard on the toilet seat raisers practical and hygienic, given the new height between the toilet seat and the toilet bowl itself when raising a toilet seat.
